GPA Calculation for the USA

In addition to using the letter grading system, grades in the United States are measured by a number called grade-point average, or GPA. Grade-point average is the cumulative average of the grades in all of a student’s classes, and is based on a scale of 0 to 4.0. Grade point average is calculated by dividing the total amount of grade points earned by the total amount of credit hours attempted. The following chart shows how to convert letter grades to a grade-point average:

Students who are applying to study abroad in the United States will usually find a minimum grade point average in the school's entry requirements. If your grade point average is above the GPA listed, you have a good chance of being accepted to that education programme. If your grade point average is close to, but not quite as high as the GPA listed, your chances of being accepted to the education programme are lower, but it's still possible so could be worth a try. Don't get discouraged - grade point average is an important number, but is one of many factors affecting students' acceptance into schools in the United States.
